Wall Street Journal: The Daily Fix

My editorial about the NFL and the CFL, published in today's Globe and Mail (Toronto), is featured in the Wall Street Journal's The Daily Fix. The Daily Fix is a "daily look at the best sportswriting on the Web," and one of the WSJ.com's most popular columns. I am an avid Fix reader so it was an honor that the fixers chose to include my piece.

Sirius: The Catholic Channel interview

I am supposed to be on Sirius Satellite Radio's "Across The Nation with Bob Dunning" show at 11:30 a.m. (PST) today. It's on the Catholic Channel (Sirius 159). I will be talking about my editorial--"Go out and play"--in The Denver Post, and maybe chat a little about The Galloping Ghost, too.

The Globe and Mail: The NFL in Toronto: Be very afraid, Canada

I have an editorial in today's Globe and Mail about the NFL's move into Canada. The Buffalo Bills are going to play a pre-season and regular season game in Toronto this year, and the editorial talks about the implications for the CFL.

For those of you not familiar with the paper, the Toronto-based Globe & Mail is Canada's paper of record; the New York Times of northern North America.

The editorial starts:

Back in 1982, I was a 57-day fan of the Canadian Football League. It was a strike season for the National Football League and I became enchanted with the Canadian game — the wide-open style and the players who had real jobs in the off-season.

This was like the NFL 50 years before — it was played by real people, and it appealed to my democratic spirit, possibly because it almost looked like I could be playing out there. But when the NFL players went back to work and the CFL coverage in the United States ended, sports coverage took me in different directions and the CFL faded from my sports-infused brain...

KOA-850 Interview with Yours Truly

Very kind of Lois Melkonian and Lou from Littleton (aka Tom Manoogian) to have me on KOA 850 News Radio's "The Ride Home" to talk about the growing softness of children and overly-protective parents. It was definitely fun to be on a station I have listened to since I was kid. I had my friends and family tune in. KOA broadcasts the syndicated The Rest of the Story, and my mother commented, "I didn't know Paul Harvey was still alive!"

The conversation centered around my article "Go Out And Play: Today's kids may be too soft to excel" in Sunday's Denver Post. I was taken back a bit by all the nice things they said about the piece. Lots of good questions--hopefully I provided a few decent answers.

I will post the MP3 of the interview once it is up on the KOA site.

Meanwhile to hear the first hour, in which the hosts talked a lot about the issue, click here.

Go out and play: Today's kids may be too soft to excel

I have an editorial in today's Denver Post. It's about kids and sports.

Addendum: I am scheduled to be on Denver's 850 KOA Radio today. I am supposed to go on just after 6 p.m. (EST) on "The Ride Home" show with Dave Logan and Lois Melkonian. A thrill to go on the station I listened to as a kid.
